Over-transfusion of red blood cells is also one of the top five areas selected by the National Summit on Overuse, as a patient safety initiative, co-hosted by the Joint Commission. Variation in clinical transfusion practices results in potential harm and waste of a limited resource, when unnecessary transfusions are given. This also contributes to public health concerns about blood products shortages.
