'Jansporting': The Backpack And The Bottle

September 27, 2017

A warning for parents about the latest dangerous - perhaps even deadly - college campus trend: Jansporting.

Named after the well-known line of backpacks, it the use of pillow-filled backpacks secured to the front and back of friends after a heavy night of drinking. The purpose? To keep passed-out friends from rolling over onto their backs and possibly choking on their own vomit.

Bad idea, says psychiatrist Dr. J. Craig Allen, an addiction medicine specialist and medical director of the Rushford Center.

"Your friend is at risk of dying," said Dr. Allen. "They could die from multiple reasons due to the alcohol toxicity," noting that if someone has been drinking to the point of passing out, medical professionals can and should be alerted immediately.
